Shunned At A Funeral - Dust Devil

I was walking through the middle of a
Nowhere town, counting my steps
With my eyes cast down.
Dust on my
Boots, heat in my veins, every
Mile just looked the same
I learned how to travel light, carry my
Fear like a birthright.
Told myself
I was doing fine, just drawing
Breath, one more line.
I didn't see it
Rising in the distance
Didn't hear it call my name
Just a traveler in the silence
Like dry ground tasting rain
Then the dust
Devil hit me sideways
Knocked the head
Off my head
Wind in my
Hair wild
And breathless, shook the dead clean
Out of my chest.
I was one thing then
I wasn't the same again
When the dust started dancing around

God got in
I've been rationing
My hope, saving prayers for when
I'm
Broke, telling heaven not today like
I could keep grace away
Every thought felt dry and thin
Every breath boxed in my skin.
I called
It strength, I called it will
But I was
Standing still
I didn't say it or resurrection
Didn't have to be undone
But something crossed the desert like
A lion in the dust.

Hair, wild-eyed, breathless.

When the dust started dancing around me

God got in.
I didn't chase it.
I didn't learn it
Didn't brace myself or dig my
Heels in
It came like breath
It came like fire
Spreading freedom from the wind what
I called chaos was a calling what
I feared was being found
Every wall
I trusted holding
Fell and turned
To holy
And singing ground.
